Mission Statement
Malteser International is the worldwide relief agency of the Sovereign Order of Malta for humanitarian aid with the status of a non-governmental organisation. The relief service has more than 50 years of experience in humanitarian relief and actually covers around 100 projects in about 20 countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Currently, 22 national associations and priories of the Order of Malta are members of Malteser International. Evolved from Malteser Germany, thus set up in accordance with German Law, and internationalized in 2005, the organisation actually has two branches: “Malteser International” in Europe (Cologne/Germany) and “Order of Malta Worldwide Relief - Malteser International Americas” in the USA (Washington DC). It provides aid in all parts of the world without distinction of religion, race or political persuasion. Christian values and the humanitarian principles of impartiality and independence are the foundation of its work. Its mission is not only to provide emergency relief, but also to implement rehabilitation measures and to facilitate the link between emergency relief and sustainable development. Malteser International establishes and promotes primary health care services and seeks to reduce vulnerability and poverty. It is committed to ensure high quality standards. Accountability and transparency are priorities of its agenda. Our mission is to support the vulnerable and marginalised to live a healthy life with dignity. Malteser International’s mission is to: 1) provide relief to major emergencies in the world and implement reconstruction and rehabilitation measures with a community focus; 2) establish and promote primary health care services and contribute to better health by providing nutrition related programmes; 3) contribute to better health and dignified living conditions by providing access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); 4) implement livelihood measures and social programmes to ensure the access of people to income security and reduce their vulnerability and poverty; 5) establish and promote disaster risk reduction activities, especially at a community level.
History of operations in Vietnam
In Viet Nam, Malteser International started to provide relief already 1966. From 1966 to 1975, during the Viet Nam war, Malteser International implemented medical emergency relief activities and reconstructed and rehabilitated hospitals in Quang Nam-Da Nang. In 1989 to 1998, Malteser International supported several hospitals in Quang-Nam-Danang province by supplying them medical equipment and by the construction of a water and sanitation system for Dai Loc district hospital. Besides, Malteser International implemented a leprosy workshop, malaria prevention programs as well as a broad based primary health care project in Quang Nam-Danang province. From 1998 onwards Malteser International diversified its activities in Vietnam. The projects in the health sector, like the training for midwives and community health workers in Kon Tum province; equipment for rescue services in Da Nang and Quang Nam provinces; upgrading medicine gardens project in Tay Giang district (2006) and Atieng health station in Tay Giang district (2008); up grading and providing X-ray machine projects for Bha'lee health station, Tay giang district (2009); Malteser International started to focus on poverty reduction and community development programs, i.e. nutrition program with integrated capacity building program for disadvantaged women; integrated project in Phuoc Son district, Quang Nam province (1999-2003); health and nutrition project in Phuoc Son district, Quang Nam province (2004 - 2005); small business promotion projects for poor women in Hoa Vang district (2004 - 2005), in Hoa Quy and Khue My ward belong to Ngu Hanh Son district, Danang city (2008-2009); Besides several relief projects after floods and typhoons (1999, 2000, 2003,2004,2006,2007, 2009) in Danang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Dong Thap Province; Malteser International has worked in the field of disaster risk preparedness (2009) and especially, started for the Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction projects in community, national and regional level since 2012 up to now. Furthermore, a "'Promoting preservation and sustainable use of forests in TayGiang district, Central Vietnam project" in 2012 to 2015 .
