Mission Statement

The mission of Helen Keller International (HKI) is to save the sight and lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged by combating the causes and consequences of blindness and malnutrition. We do this by establishing programs based on evidence and research in vision, health and nutrition.

History of operations in Vietnam

HKI started its work in Viet Nam in the early 1990s and managed the implementation of its eye health programs through national counterparts at the National Eye Hospital (NEH). A large-scale surgical training program, supported by HKI at the NEH, started in 1990. This activity was facilitated through the establishment of five training centers in underserved regions in the northern, central and southern parts of the country. HKI’s involvement in nutrition programs of the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) started in 1994 through the support of HKI’s Asia Pacific Regional Office. Continuing expansion of HKI’s activities led to the establishment of our Viet Nam country office in 2003, with HKI obtaining a Permit of Operations soon thereafter.
