Mission Statement

"For those affected by trauma and those who support them, Hagar is an expert in care and recovery. When healing happens, the cycle of trauma stops. Who: Survivors, mainly women and children who have experienced the worst kind of exploitation, violence, and abuses. Where: Focusing upon northern Vietnam provinces but accepting very complex cases nationally. How: Through 4 strategic goals: Survivor care, Prevention, System strengthening, Survivor leadership. We provide survivors, directly and indirectly, with the support and access to quality social services they need to heal and live independent lives. We strengthen prevention in target communities. We facilitate survivors with opportunities to lead in their community, nationally, and internationally. We use our field-based experiences to strengthen national legislation and implementation standards.

History of operations in Vietnam

Hagar International in Vietnam, an international NGO registered in Switzerland, was established in 2009, in response to needs of women and child survivors of human trafficking, gender-based violence, and abuse to receive increased preventive and responsive services. Based in Hanoi, Hagar initially established an office in the Centre for Women’s Development, before moving to its Tay Ho premises in 2012. Based on the experiences of Hagar’s global network since 1994, Hagar is a trauma-informed care specialist agency. We have ensured survivors, directly and indirectly, are provided specialized, multi-sectoral support and access to social services to recover and heal. We reinforce the need for communities to disseminate preventive approaches, that protect vulnerable community members from violence, exploitation and abuse. From the beginning, we have sought opportunities to provide survivors, and those at risk, with opportunities to demonstrate leadership at their community, national, and international level. We continue to use our field-based experiences, to strengthen national legislation policies and procedures. Since 1994, Hagar has served thousands of women and children, in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Vietnam. Hagar’s founder, Pierre Tami was recognized as one of the six world-wide heroes in the fight against modern slavery by the US Department of State in 2004 and received the Schwab Foundation Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2005.
