Mission Statement
The Fred Hollows Foundation (FHF) is an Australian-based, not-for-profit, community-based, non-government development aid organisation. We believe that everyone has the right to sight. We hold a vision of a world where no one is needlessly blind and where Indigenous Australians enjoy the same health and life expectancy as other Australians. We are dedicated to facilitating comprehensive and quality eye care, with a focus on cataracts. Through skills training programmes and the development of new technologies, the Foundation builds sustainable local capacity to prevent and treat avoidable blindness in developing countries.
History of operations in Vietnam
In Vietnam, FHF is a popular NGO known by many eye doctors and ophthalmologists since the Foundation launched its most active contributions to eye health services in Vietnam from 1992-2000, which was a challenging period for the country's eye care sector. At that time around one million Vietnamese people needed cataract surgery, and 350,000 were totally blind. The late Professor Fred Hollows visited Vietnam in April 1992 to keep a promise he had made to the Vietnamese government, to train over 300 surgeons in modern cataract surgery techniques. The Fred Hollows Foundation Vietnam opened in 1993 to continue this work, and has grown into the largest NGO eye health program in the country. FHF Vietnam works in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology (VNIO) and health departments at all levels to implement the country’s Blindness Prevention Plan and achieve the goals of VISION 2020 for the global elimination of avoidable blindness. The Foundation has played a major role in increasing the cataract surgery rate from nearly 900 per million people per year to nearly 1,500 as of July 2010. FHF Vietnam is increasingly working with children, addressing the major cause of low vision, refractive errors. FHF Vietnam currently supports partners across 16 provinces of Ha Giang, Hanoi, Thai Binh, Hai Duong, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, Dak Lak, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Vinh Long, Tien Giang, and Ho Chi Minh City. The Foundation has an office located in Da Nang City where 20 staff are led by Country Manager, Dr Huynh Tan Phuc. A branch office is also based in Hanoi, with 2 staff.
