Mission Statement
The global objective of EAST is to reduce endemic diseases caused by the consumption of unhealthy water and the lack of hygiene. In order to reach this objective, EAST Vietnam implements projects in rural and peri-urban areas, which provide populations with access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Our actions are completed by information and communication activities, which aim at improving hygiene behaviors.
History of operations in Vietnam
• Thai Nguyen province (1994-1997) School program (87 primary schools) for improvement of pupil’s socio-sanitary conditions: water supply and sanitation facilities, advocacy on best hygiene and health practices, health education lessons and basic health treatments supply. • Bac Can province (1994-1997) This project aimed at improving hygiene habits of the population in several villages. It strove to solve unhealthy problems at schools in an ethnic minority area and to advocate on sanitary education. • Water Solidarity Program I and ll (PSE I and ll), Nam Dinh province (1998-2002) and Ninh Binh province (2003-2010) Program for improvement of people socio-sanitary conditions in 10 communes in rural sector: implementation of a community piped water supply system, sanitation facilities and advocacy on hygiene. This program aimed at providing the provincial agency of CERWASS with water supply plants maintenance and operation patterns. In 2004, Nam Dinh was proclaimed as a “model province’ regarding the management of its water supply plants. • Sanitation program in 6 communes of Gia Lam district, hanoi (2007-2010). In the commune of Kieu ky Implementation of a pilot domestic “DEcentralized WAstewater Treatment System” (DEWATS) plant ; proposal of a model wastewater treatment system for craft pollution ; advocate on the importance of sanitation and environment. In 6 communes of Gia lam district, implementation of a waste sorting project.
