Mission Statement

In the values which guide Cesvi, the moral principle of human solidarity and the ideal of social justice are transformed into humanitarian aid and development, reinforcing an affirmation of universal human rights. To attain its objectives, Cesvi follows these guiding principles: -To recognize the needs and aspirations of local communities; respecting their culture, traditions and customs and to look for dialogue and collaboration with their organizations. -To work impartially for the needs of others, without distinction of sex, race, culture, or creed, but paying greatest attention to those most at risk: children, women, the elderly and the underprivileged. -To promote forms of development leading to economic independence: environmental sustainability and respect for human rights, among others (ww.cesvi.eu).

History of operations in Vietnam

In the Vietnamese context, strong traditional partnerships between CESVI and local institutions shall continue into the foreseeable future. In conjunction to this approach, CESVI shall increasingly apply a strong participatory approach to project design and implementation and in doing so, support the general program philosophy. CESVI intends to strengthen and increase links and working partnerships with Vietnamese civil society organizations, local NGOs and grass roots organizations with the aim of improving the capacity of all parties, sharing knowledge and skills and empowering staff, volunteers and ultimately project beneficiaries, who are seen as partners in the implementation of projects not simply beneficiaries. Since 1992, CESVI has been working in the field of malnutrition control and prevention in Viet Nam. In particular CESVI has supported the Child Nutrition Centre (CNC) of Ho Chi Minh City founded in 1989. Today the CNC is the national leading centre in child nutrition and the reference centre in the nutrition sector for all provinces of southern Viet Nam. The success of the CNC is largely due to close and effective co-operation with CESVI in the establishment of an integrated, multi-sectoral strategy to tackle all aspects of malnutrition. CESVI has gone on to forge successful partnerships with the Hanoi Health Service (HHS), the Hanoi Red Cross (HRC) and the Hanoi Agricultural University. Program Description The overall aim of CESVI's activities in Viet Nam is to improve Mother and Child Health with a particular focus on prevention and reduction of child malnutrition. Activities encompass: elaboration of IEC materials; awareness raising campaigns; education of mothers and schoolchildren; growth monitoring; training of health workers on community and clinical nutrition; scientific workshops for university professors and trainers; production and distribution of appropriate food and supplements for kindergartens, hospitals and families; support of integrated farming systems at the household level (VAC) with micro-credit schemes and clinical consultations. The scope of CESVI’s activities have expanded to include the development of projects looking to improve access to legal services for people living and working with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), sex workers and drug users and supporting the reduction of negative stigmatization and discrimination. CESVI has increasingly implemented projects dealing with environmental issues, most recently developing tools that shall reduce the harmful effects of human and animal waste in the Semi Urban environment through the application of new technologies. The link between health and the environment is considered an important factor in developing both health and environmental projects, and the link is further explored through CESVI’s project partners, the Hanoi Health Service and the Hanoi Agricultural University. Moreover from 2008 CESVI has overseen the establishment of a coordinated system for the maintenance and repairing of medical equipment to improve the quality of public health services provided by a number of pilot hospitals. Activities shall continue to concentrate on improving the rights of people living and working with HIV/AIDS and reducing the harmful effects of stigmatization, discrimination and the concept that these target groups suffer from ‘Social Evils’. In conjunction with partners, practical solutions are being developed to limit the problems relating to the non correct disposal of human and animal waste. These solutions include the construction of specialized household latrines, the organization of composting cooperatives and training on health issues related to the wider subject. In 2010 CESVI has started the Creation of a best-practice model for a one-stop centre, branded as “The Positive Living Centre”, for RH and for provision of services, as well as the networking and coordination for effective referral and services links, for vulnerable groups in HIV prevention and treatment. The centre will possibly expand to Gender-based violence prevention and legal services provision.
