WB Pledges to Fund Water Projects in Vietnam Southern Province

The World Bank (WB) will fund three water projects in Vietnam’s southern province of Kien Giang in order to reduce the environmental pollution and improve living standards for locals, the Cong An Nhan Dan newspaper reported June 10, citing WB Country Director in Vietnam Victoria Kwakwa. Kwakwa heard the three projects, with an estimated investment of $76 million, while meeting with the province’s leaders June 8 on the sidelines of the ongoing mid-term Consultative Group (CG) meeting. The projects include two drainage and wastewater treatment systems in the Rach Gia city and Ha Tien town and a clean water supply system in the southern Rach Gia city. All domestic wastewater from the two urban areas currently are being discharged in sea without treatment. At the 2009 CG Meeting, the WB pledged $2.498 billion in aid for Vietnam this year, said the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI).
