Vietnam Province Oks $1.33M Medical Wastewater Treatment Project

Authorities of Vietnam’s central province of Quang Nam have approved a VND25.4 billion ($1.33 million) project to build medical wastewater treatment systems at local hospitals. The project will benefit five districts of Phu Ninh, Thang Binh, Tien Phuoc, Nam Giang, Tay Giang and Tam Ky city, the Dai Bieu Nhan Dan newspaper reported Aug 5. The systems are expected to reduce environment pollution that becoming worse in the province, the newspaper added. Healthcare facilities nationwide discharge nearly 340 tons of solid medical waste per day, the Vietnam Environment Administration said, adding that Vietnam needs between $120 million and $150 million to invest in medical waste treatment systems. Vietnam now has nearly 200 incinerators which receive and treat medical waste from 435 hospitals out of 854 hospitals nationwide.
