Vietnam Northern City Alerted Rising Imported Industrial Wastes

Authorities of Vietnam’s northern city of Haiphong have warned of the rising number of containers of industrial wastes loaded in local ports, with more than 300 containers have been found so far this year. The industrial wastes were reportedly imported to Vietnam under the form of export-import contract or temporary import for re-export services. The batches, thus, seemed to be legal when registering customs declaration. Local police forces Aug 31 detected 10 containers of car tires at the Chua Ve port, the state-run Vietnam News Agency said late Aug 31. This batch of goods, which was carried to the port by the ship Van Hung in Mar, 2010, reportedly belongs to the city-based Exim International Co., Ltd. Local authorities are making procedures to deal with the batch. The city-based ports, which are facing the high risk of becoming a dump of imported solid industrial wastes, have to date received nearly 3,000 containers of toxic wastes since 2003.
