Vietnam to Improve Human Resources for Environment Sector

The Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has mapped out a plan to strengthen its human resources in the period of 2011-2015 with a vision for further development by 2020, with a total investment of VND10.6 trillion ($543.59 million). The plan will focus on training 45,000 more staff between 2011 and 2015 and enhancing the manpower quality to satisfy the sector’s requirement, the state-run Vietnam News Agency said Oct 18, citing an official of the ministry. Of the total, 10,000 officials will work for the environment sector, 8,000 ones for the land sector, 1,000 for hydrometeorology sector, 3,000 for the water resource sector and 20,000 for the sea and island fields. Giang Duc Chung, deputy head of the ministry’s Department of Personnel and Organization, said the ministry concentrates on training manpower in the sectors of land, water resources, hydrometeorology, map measurement and mineral geology from 2016 to 2020. Vietnam has a few trained staff in the sectors of water resources, hydrometeorology and irrigation of departments of natural resources and environment nationwide, Chung added. Some northern provinces of Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Hai Duong and Thai Binh have not any trained officials in these fields. Currently, Vietnam has a total of 78 universities and colleges training human resources for the sectors of natural resources and environment. (Vietnam News Oct 18 p4)
