Vietnam Central Highlands Province Will Carry Out Un-REDD Project

Vietnam’s central province of Lam Dong will carry out a $3.4 million project to cut greenhouse emissions and deal with global climate change within the United Nations framework convention on the issue. The 20-month project is part of UN Collaborative Program on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) and improving the technical capability and management and coordinating mechanisms from central to local levels. Sponsored by the Norwegian Government, the project will be combined with the Lam Dong province’s land use program to prevent forest degradation, the Voice of Vietnam radio said. The results gained from the project will serve as an important foundation for the UN to devise a master program for dissemination in other countries. Lam Dong province was selected for the program because it has the largest forest coverage in the country and experience in implementing major forestry programs. Vietnam is one of nine countries in the world chosen by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to implement the UN-REDD program.
