Richter Earthquake Hits Northern Vietnam

An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale hit Vietnam’s northern province of Son La yesterday, Nov. 26, with aftershocks felt in Hanoi, state media reported Friday.  The epicenter is located 38 km from Son La City and about 37 km southeast of the Son La hydropower plant construction site, the Center for Tsunamis and Earthquake Warning said, adding that the earthquake’s focal point was 10-15 km under the ground. Le Huy Minh director of the center said that no damage caused by the quake had been reported in Son La Province or in Hanoi.
"We are continuing to monitor any aftershocks from the earthquake to make sure we know if any damage has occurred," Minh said.
Vu Duc Thin from the Electricity of Vietnam’s board of directors confirmed that the Son La hydro-power plant had not been affected by the quake.
Vietnam has at least 30 earthquake prone areas, including parts of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
