3 Foreign Oil Firms Grant 750 Scholarships to Vietnamese Children

U.S. oil giant Chevron Corp., Japanese Mitsui Oil Exploration Co., and Thai PTT Exploration and Production Public Co., Ltd (PTTEP) granted 750 scholarships totaling VND2.3 billion ($121,053) to Vietnamese disadvantaged children on June 18. Beneficiaries came from Can Tho City, Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang and Hau Giang provinces in the Mekong Delta region, the Vietnam News Agency said June 21. Chevron, Mitsui and PTTEP have been carrying out a natural gas production project costing $4 billion off Vietnam’s southwest coast. The project is slated for commercial production in 2014 to produce 14 million cubic meters a day in the first five years and feed power plants in Vietnam. Last year, the three oil firms granted 700 scholarships totaling over VND900 million ($47,368) to needy pupils in Can Tho City and Ca Mau and Kien Giang provinces.
